The first annual They Need To Go For a Safety fantasy league concluded last week. The final winner, in both season standings and playoffs, was Mr. Stev Lipenta.
Congrats. Here's your trophy:
(gotta have the Macho hink)
The first season was a rousing success, for the most part. I was a little worried about the rookies to fantasy football picking up the nuances, but they all came through (unless they didn't try at all). In fact, I think the three most active participants were all relative newbies to this whole thing.
A team by team recap of league happenings:
1. Pennsuaken Taylors - Stev won the league title and the playoffs with a balanced attack, and bringing in solid running backs after his top three picks had problems. He also scored big by getting the unlikable duo of Romo and TO... so congrats, Stev, you won by taking two people everyone else hated way to much to take at a decent time. I hope you're happy.
2. Alta Loma 79ers - I'm not entirely sure how I finished second in league standings and playoffs. My team was okay, but not spectacular. The best thing I did was picking up Adrian Peterson in a late round. He carried them at points, and he could carry a pitiful offense to the playoffs in real life. Fuck Brady - that's worth an MVP to me.
And Jay Cutler, you are dead to me. Eli, you're not much better.
3. Phyllis Diller - Danno came through after a subpar season to finish third in the playoffs and cement that all the people who actively participate in this blog also finish in the top three. Nicely done. Willie Parker turned out to be more than a hometown favorite, and gambling on Randy Moss really paid off.
4. Team Discovery Channel - I had sweet revenge over Drewber's team in the playoffs because he had the team I wanted. And he finished first in points during the season, so he might have had the best team overall. Westbrook, Brees, Gates - I wanted them all. And he scooped them up just a few picks before me. Biggest move - picking up Derek Anderson, which looked at first like a knee-jerk reaction, but ended up carrying him to the points title.
5. The Gravediggers - proving himself wrong, Paul did not finish last. His top two picks suffered, but he came through to get some wins. See, anything can happen.
6. Undercover Busboys - Kevner had the first pick and used LDT to get a decent showing. He also picked up the everyday process of running a fantasy team, despite having little knowledge of football fantasy works. He just missed out on a few games and could have finished higher with some luck.
7. Clown Clergy - the Doctor decided to take chances and swing for the fences, considering there was no money involved. Didn't work. Next year, we hope that effort changes.
8. Kant's Kraftwerks - Dom decided to not make any changes... at all. Too bad, because he had one of the best teams. He had the best QB duo and then had Favre on the bench, whom he could have traded for a big back. He won some games with just 6 active people. Alas. He could have won the league of his two backs didn't get hurt and he participated.
I'm looking forward to next year. This is just the beginning of hopefully a long tradition of league play. We will have an incentive, smaller rosters, and maybe some new members. All bets are off... or on.
